High in the forested hills of the Western Ghats, inside the Periyar Tiger Reserve, stands the shrine of Lord Ayyappa – Sree Dharma Sastha. Millions of pilgrims climb to Sabarimala every season, making it one of the largest pilgrimages in the world. The hill is named after Shabari, the devotee of Rama in the Ramayana, who is believed to have lived in these forests.
Sabarimala is not a temple you simply drop in on. It is open only in certain seasons, and the journey itself is the worship: weeks of vratham, the irumudi carried on the head, the climb from Pamba with the call 'Swamiye Saranamayyappa', and finally the eighteen holy steps to the sannidhanam. Every pilgrim is addressed as 'Swami' or 'Ayyappa', a reminder that, on this hill, all are equal before the Lord.
The story goes that the King of Pandalam found a baby boy with a bell (mani) around his neck on the banks of the Pamba and raised him as his own son, naming him Manikandan. The boy grew up to be the divine Ayyappa, born of Shiva and Mohini, the female form of Vishnu. He is said to have gone into the forest to bring back tigress's milk for the queen, slain the demoness Mahishi, and then revealed his true nature. He shot an arrow to show where his temple should stand, and the shrine at Sabarimala was built at that spot. Ayyappa is believed to sit there in deep meditation, as an eternal celibate.
Devotees also honour Vavar, a Muslim warrior and friend of Ayyappa; his shrine stands at the sannidhanam and the Vavar mosque at Erumeli is visited by many pilgrims – a living sign of harmony between faiths. Malikappurathamma, worshipped in a shrine near the main temple, is regarded as almost as important as Ayyappa himself.
In recorded history, the temple was badly damaged by fire in 1950 and rebuilt; the present idol is made of panchaloha. The Thazhamon family hold the hereditary role of thanthri, and the temple is administered by the Travancore Devaswom Board. Harivarasanam, the song sung each night as the nada closes, became part of the ritual in the years after 1950. Questions about the traditional restriction on women of a certain age have been before the courts since 2018 (see Entry below).

- മണ്ഡലകാലം – വൃശ്ചികം ഒന്ന് (നവംബർ മധ്യം) മുതൽ ഡിസംബർ അവസാനത്തെ മണ്ഡലപൂജ വരെ ഏകദേശം 41 ദിവസം;
- മകരവിളക്ക് കാലം – ഏകദേശം ഡിസംബർ 30 മുതൽ ജനുവരി 20 വരെ; മകരം ഒന്നിന് (ഏകദേശം ജനുവരി 14) മകരവിളക്ക്;
- എല്ലാ മലയാളമാസത്തിലെയും ആദ്യത്തെ അഞ്ചോളം ദിവസം (മാസപൂജ);
Sabarimala does not open every day. The nada opens for:
- the Mandala season – about 41 days from Vrischikam 1 (mid-November) to the Mandala Pooja in late December;
- the Makaravilakku season – from about 30 December to around 20 January, with Makaravilakku on Makaram 1 (about 14 January);
- the first five days or so of every Malayalam month (monthly pooja);
- Vishu (Medam, April), the Thiru Utsavam in Meenam (March–April), the Prathishta day (Edavam), Onam and a few other special days.
On opening days the nada usually opens before dawn and closes at night after Harivarasanam, with a break in the afternoon; hours are longer in the main season. Exact dates and hours change every year – check the Travancore Devaswom Board's temple calendar and follow the current official notices.
Pilgrims traditionally keep a vratham of 41 days before the climb. It begins by wearing a mala of tulasi or rudraksha beads given by a priest or a Guruswamy, and it means a simple vegetarian life, celibacy, no alcohol or tobacco, daily prayer and plain black or blue clothes. On the eve of the journey the irumudi is packed in the kettunira ceremony: the front part holds the offerings – above all a coconut filled with ghee – and the back part the pilgrim's own provisions. By custom, only pilgrims carrying an irumudi climb the eighteen holy steps (pathinettampadi).
Darshan during the main season is managed through a virtual-queue booking on the Travancore Devaswom Board's official online portal (sabarimalaonline.org); carry the booking and the ID you used. Whether on-the-spot booking is offered changes from season to season. By long tradition, women between about 10 and 50 years of age do not undertake the pilgrimage; the Supreme Court set this restriction aside in 2018, review petitions were referred to a larger bench in 2019, and the matter remains before the court. Please follow the current official notices of the Devaswom Board and the authorities.
Most pilgrims travel by road to Nilakkal (base camp) and Pamba, bathe in the Pamba and walk about 5 km uphill via Neelimala and Saramkuthi to the sannidhanam. The traditional forest route from Erumeli is much longer and is walked by some pilgrims in the season. The last week of December and the days around Makaravilakku are the most crowded; monthly-pooja days are calmer. Wear sturdy footwear for the path, drink water, and follow the police and forest-department instructions – the area is a protected forest.

Pamba Ganapathi Temple – at the start of the climb
Erumeli – the Dharma Sastha temple and Vavar mosque, the start of the traditional route
